The purpose of this report is to sort through the large number of web pages and present the more factual and accurate pages. In this extended listing, annotations provide information about the site so readers can determine if this is the type of site they would wish to view personally. Some citations provide references to web pages that physicians can present to their patients in language understandable by non-physicians. An alphabetic code describes various features of each site. The key to the code is presented at the end of the list. If readers have their favorite site and it is not listed please feel free to contact the author at the e-mail address listed (sarcoid@sarcoidcenter.com).

Magnitude of the Problem

In order to put the problem in perspective the following is a list of Internet search engines with the results (in numbers of pages found) of a search on the word "sarcoidosis." Keep in mind that many of these are redundant in that the same page may be listed under different search engines and within a given search engine multiple times under a different aspect of sarcoidosis (e.g. treatment, pathology, etc.). In addition, there are relatively few sites devoted solely to sarcoidosis and non-physicians write most of these. The distinction between entire sites and portions of sites dealing with sarcoidosis will be made in the annotations. A tabular analysis of the results is presented here.

The process started with a web search. At the last search 7861 citations were found. Most had low relevance. The initial search of 1746 references disallowed viewing of entries after the first 1000. After viewing 1000 citations, 296 unique sites were found of which 265 consisted of sites that did not represent redundant citations of previously viewed sites. 11 were bad links leading nowhere. The remaining 254 sites have been catalogued and presented to you in this article.

Conclusions

There were a large number of references to sarcoidosis among web pages on the internet. Most of these references were redundant and cited a relatively few number of unique pages. Among those unique pages very few (19) were about only sarcoidosis. Many of the pages only about sarcoidosis were written by laymen (16) and were oriented toward patient support with a minor content of factual information. There were only 22 sites considered to be major in that they contained multiple pages of information, many aspects such as links, illustrations, references and excellent discussions. The paucity of web pages dedicated to sarcoidosis was surprising, and it is this author's hope that the presentation of this data will stimulate the development of additional good quality web sites.
